Movember

Who: The Movember Foundation and their supporters.

What: Grow a ’stache and help raise money to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation. As a symbol of manhood, the mustache became the focus for the campaign and has added a fun competitive spirit to the good cause. Movember encourages women to join the movement. Yes, yes, we can’t actually grow a mustache but we can support our Mo-Bros and help raise funds.

Where: The month of Movember is celebrated world wide. Since 2004 the campaign has raised $45 million USD for its beneficiary partners in Australia, New Zealand, UK, US, Canada, Spain and Ireland.

Why: Support a good cause. All money raised will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (in the US, half the proceeds will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.).

When: Movember (formally known as November) starts the day after Halloween aka November 1st. Mo-Bro’s have the full month to grow their ’stache, all while collection donations. A gala in each city is held at the end of the month, where each Bro dresses up to match his mo.

Support: Moustache Men!

MAMMA MIA: SWEDES DO IT BETTER

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

swedish-fish

There are some major stereotypes about Sweden. People think swedes are a bunch of beautiful blonds who smell like campfire and only concern themselves with ABBA, gummy fish, Nobel Peace Prizes and bikes. All these stereotypes are pretty much true. Swedish people are gorgeous ladies and gents who only shop at thrift stores, eat elk, and enjoy jogging and biking. Seriously. That’s what they do. Finding kids with cool style was so easy it was overwhelming. Here’s eight of the best:

Name: Alana Du Rietz

How would you describe your personal style? Every day it changes. Today I channeled a japanese school girl.

Where do you get your clothes? I get them when I travel abroad and I go to vintage stores here.

(Note: Alana made sure to get her “pimped out bike” in the shot. Consider it done, Alana.)

Seven For All Snowboarders

Vans X Seven for all Mankind Snowboard Pants

For those who have grown up on the hills, seeing these you might be flashing back to those unfavorable, unfashionable, uneducated tourist wearing jeans, inadequate jackets to match and sunglasses instead of goggles. If you ride, you know that every item you wear needs to be as practical and comfortable as it is stylish. Snow bunny isn’t the way to go, but looking good on the hill is still a must.

This season, premium denim company, Seven for all Mankind, has teamed up with Vans to do just that–creating a fully functional denim snowboard pant. Modeled after Seven’s ever-popular NY Boot-Cut style, these pants may look exactly like a pair of regular jeans, but they’re designed for a rider and are perfect for the snow. Insulated for the cold days, waterproof and breathable to keep you dry and zippers at the bottom to fit them over your snowboard boots, these are perfect for the halfpipe and for that apr√®s-ski fun. Cheers!

VW X Melissa Gives You Wings

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Having previously collaborated on these hearty favorites, Vivienne Westwood and Melissa join forces again–this time it comes in the form of the Wing Rocking Horse Shoe. The good people here aren’t sure if this flat wedge style needs to fall back (it can look a little orthopedic-ish at times), but we think this viv and melissa collab is fun. One thing that is for sure, these shoes give you wings (and an extra couple inches on your height). Available in black, gold and white.

Seba-go(es) for a Ride

cool-cats-sebago-docksides

Another successful collaboration hits the streets. The New England marine shoe company, Sebago, has taken the less conservative route this month and brings the Cool Cats along for the ride. Resident Cool Cats designer, So-Me, known for his use of bright color, did his thing with the 1960’s Docksides boat shoe. The shoe was made in a safe black leather with a red insole, and every eyelet is a bright primary color. Nice looking shoe! We were expecting something a little more exciting but maybe the next team effort will be sans cruise control.

This edition is limited to 75 pairs, and is available at colette.

Habits Pour La Vie

bensimon-fall-winter-09

For plain canvas sneakers we have Vans, Italy has Superga, and France has Bensimon. And Serge and Yves Bensimon have grown Bensimon from an Army Surplus store opened at the end of World War II into a shoe brand, concept store and magazine. Their now famous “La Tennis Bensimon” canvas sneaker was originally adopted by the French fashion community and in 25 years has become a ‚Äúmust have‚Äù in women‚Äôs wardrobes worldwide.

Putting shoes aside for a second, Bensimon has just released their Fall/Winter ‘09 clothing collection. Naming the collection “Habits Pour La Vie,” Clothing For Life, they have used classic materials and colors, sewn with transparent thread–a subtle signature that gives them “a timeless and contemporary soul.”
