We Are Weird

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The New York Times confirms today that people are absolute freaks. Photographer Taryn Simon, shot a set of 1,075 photos of detained or seized contraband from passengers or mail entering the US at the New York Kennedy airport. From Louis Vuitton handbags to guinea pigs to a bag of lard, "Contraband" is a beautiful display of how weird we are as people. The selection of photos will be shown as an exhibition and turned into a book. "The miscellany of prohibited objects — from the everyday to the illegal to the just plain odd — attests to a growing worldwide traffic in counterfeit goods and natural exotica and offers a snapshot of the United States as seen through its illicit material needs and desires, " The New York Times says. It must be a gross, disgusting, and always entertaining job  for whoever has to go through this stuff regularly.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP

Friday, July 30th, 2010
Want to wear a garden around your neck? Okay, maybe not, but these Terrarium Necklaces by Erica Weiner are really cute. Water every 2-3 days. [Trendland] Snooki is a topic of conversation at the White House Correspondents dinner. [Double X] And some serious defense for Snooki against this New York Times piece. [Four Four] Dutch author, Ruud Lissen, published his book, "Book of War, Mortification and Love" in his own blood. After a serious malfunction at the printing press, the process had to be re-done which meant that Liseen lost half a liter of blood. Anything for art, right? So black metal. Watch the video here. [Underconsideration] Yeah, yeah saggy pants were a big issue in court but the rules say people can wear what they want as long as it doesn't offend public order and decency. Take a look to the left of that NY Post cover and then let's talk about decency. #TaylorMomsen #wannabe #boring #getyourownstyle [Blogue] Don't go in the water guys! Happy August! Treehotel

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010
"Why not create a comfortable, well designed hotel which allows visitors to live in harmony with nature amongst trees?" From that question, Treehotel was born. Located in northern Sweden, 60 k south of the Arctic Circle, you can stay in one of the four rooms that officially opened last week. There's the Mirrorcube, the Bird's Nest, the Cabin and the Blue Cone--all designed by 4 separate architects. Two more rooms will be available in October, just in time for your husky sled safari or skijoring (towed on skis by a galloping horse). It costs about $3000+ for a night, but--memo to the ladies of Teen Mom--0-2 year olds are free of charge. See more pictures of the rooms below. Via: NYT
