Saturday Selection

Saturday, June 30th, 2012
Luis_Mora_Photography Every Saturday we select a photo from our Flickr pool to be featured on hearty Luis Mora is  24-year-old photographer who was born and raised between Ibague, Colombia and Miami, Florida.  As a child Luis was around fashion magazines, clothing catalogs and sewing machines a lot because his family had a clothing company and his mother was the head designer. Because of this Luis was exposed to images from photographers like Helmun Newton early on. At the age of 12 Luis's family moved to Miami, Florida and over the next few years he was exposed to hip-hop, raves, graffiti and of course girls. Luis's interest in photography blossomed in high school. He wanted his photos to look like the ones in magazines, so he started taking photography classes and the obsession was born. Five years ago, Luis moved to Canada and decided to go to Sheridan College for Applied Photography. He now lives in Toronto working as a freelance photo assistant. Luis's focus is not one directional, but he definitely has shot a lot of nudes. "I think I am almost done with the topic of shooting nudes and personal photos of girls and the plan is to start mixing that with death," Luis says. "I am very inspired by Spanish artist and how they deal with death. I am mainly focusing in black and white photography at the moment. I feel like my style and photos are getting darker and darker." The photo above is of Luis' friend Katie, who has been a muse of his over the past few years. "I have folders and boxes full of files and negatives of Katie. They are tagged with something like Katie nude 1, Katie naked shower 3, Katie black and white 2, K naked in bed, Katie polaroid boobs, K leather 2. [Laughs.] And it just keep going and going". Luis generally shoots both film and digital, his favorite camera's being the Canon 7D, Olympus Stylus, Yashica T4, and Polaroids Land Cameras 100 and 350 with FujiFilm FP 3000B and 100C. Luis also just finished a zine called "Photographs in No Particular Order" and is preparing  for a group show in August at the Mascot in Toronto. Grizzly King: Q+A with Baauer

Friday, June 29th, 2012
Baauer even looks a bit like a fierce grizzly. Baauer is the latest sensation off Mad Decent's Jeffree's imprint. His single "Harlem Shake" has been making dancefloors erupt across the world since its release and the 22-year-old Brooklyn native is just getting started. He's touring the world, jumping on to help mix BBC Radio 1 tapes with Diplo, and playing tonight at the grand finale of the hottest party to hit NYC in the last decade: hearty's Summer in Training. We caught up with Baauer to talk about his love for Pretty Flacko, spirit animals and frozen Ikea meatballs. Catch him tonight headlining Summer In Training Vol. 5 at Tribeca Grand with your devoted hosts the #HRTY crew and guest DJs and hosts from US emcee collective #BEEN #TRILL. Come early to guarantee entry, we filled house last week and this is your very last chance! Read our interview with Baauer below. Can a Brooklyn kid like you actually Harlem Shake? Yes. Tell me about the trajectory of how you went from making techno and house to trap and hip hop? I had been making house music for years and years, but always felt like I was falling short of the sound I wanted. I started making some hip hop bootleg remixes for fun, and it felt really natural and fresh, so I stuck with it! Where'd the name Baauer come from? It's my middle name. What'd you listen to growing up? Rafi. Banana phone changed the way I think about music. And bananas. What can people at "hearty magazine Presents Summer in Training" expect from your set on Friday? A mish mash of hyped up bass heavy club tracks, with an emphasis on hip hop! Anyone you're dying to work with? A$AP Rocky is someone I'd love to work with. He has a great style which I think would match my production pretty well. What's next in your music career? Lots of collaborations with fellow hiphop producers, and an EP coming in the fall! What's your fashion style like--any brands you're repping hard? I only wear gucci sweatpants and Von Dutch tees. What's your go to midnight snack? Frozen Ikea meatballs. What's your spirit animal? The mighty grizzly. King of the kodiac.

Before Gucci Gucci it was Play Station Play Station Kreayshawn has put out a montage of home video adorableness she shot when she was 10 years old. From sleepovers dancing to "Oochie Wally" (kinda awkward) to clips of her parents (her moms obviously also had tattoos) and an introduction to her pet lizard (who just shed his skin), the video which Kreayshawn has titled "Baby Kreay @ 10 years old" gives us a glimpse into where the young rapper came from. Watch "Baby Kreay @ 10 years old" above.
