My Blog__ Mama Africa (R.I.P)

I think it's safe to say that Miriam Makeba is probably the coolest jazz singer who ever lived. Born in 1932 in South Africa, Miriam Makeba (a.k.a Mama Africa) started singing as a young child and later formed The Skylarks who clicked and clacked a mix of jazz and traditional South African music. 'Pata Pata' is a catchy, pop tune that puts all that Graceland blues to shame.

Five Reasons I Heart Mama Africa:

1. She married civil rights activist, Stokely Carmichael.

2. The Click Song.

3. She made a guest appearance on The Cosby Show (Episode: Olivia Comes Out of the Closet)

4. She won a Grammy and was too busy with her civil rights activism to really care.

5. However, she wasn't too cool for musicals (starred in King Kong in 1959)
