My Blog__ The Garment Industry

October 16, 2009 | By

This blog never gets too personal so I'll try to sum this up in a paragraph or two.

I work in the Fashion Industry, I graduated from Fashion Management and was thrown into the hustle and bustle of the Canadian industry working in the Buying Office for the Hudson's Bay company almost six years ago. Since then I've worked on basically every opportunity made available to me on top of holding an office position behind the scenes. I currently work for a Fashion Distributor on Chabanel "the fashion district" of Montreal and I'm working on launching a tshirt line, styling and designing either my own line or someone elses. I'm telling you this because my biggest obstacle in the latter (and with the t shirts) is finding an ethical manufacturer, maybe even - fingers crossed - one that can source organic and/or sustainable fabrics, dyes and lastly, someone North America, preferably even in Montreal.

I'm all for providing other countries with work, but to ensure that it is taking place in an ethical manner requires a lot of capital and I myself am quite small.

That being said I hope that you can now imagine how excited I am to watch HBO's documentary Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags - A documentary on New York City's garment industry airing this Monday. I hope for it explain whats happened, why and where to go from here. Is that too much to ask? Read more here.
