Hana May / When Did This Become Hotter Than This?

I'm team Bettie, Shirley, Elizabeth and Marilyn all the way Yah, this has been floating around and you've probably already seen someone post it on their Facebook wall, followed by an onslaught of statements like "hell ya" but seriously--when did this become hotter than this? And who really thinks this is hot? I'd like to know. And why do we as a society keep feeding (not literally, of course) this kind of image? And how do we make it stop?

  1. This image is fat chick propaganda. Stop trying to change the definition of hot. Nobody likes fat chicks. Get in shape, do some exercise, eat healthy food. Then people will think you are hot too.

  2. Hana May

    And what’s your BMI Josh?

  3. “Fat chick propaganda” is that a technical term?

  4. Jess Bloom

ok, but my thing is, aren’t ALL the options beautiful? shouldn’t that be the message?

  5. Why are they all white?

  6. Mel Zee

i wish somebody would stop feeding josh. then maybe he’d be too weak to type such dumb, offensive shit

  7. [...] Now, I’ve always struggled with how I view my body. I can’t really remember that last time I looked in the mirror and was satisfied with how my body looked. And I know I’m not the only one out there who feels the same way! I’m a woman with natural curves, and despite my best efforts I find it incredibly hard to be proud of those curves when from all angles I am bombarded by the media screaming that my body type is undesirable (although I don’t know how anyone can possibly take a gander at the picture of the model on the right and think undesirable.) And what really gets my goat is when a magazine or website thinks they’ll show off how accepting they are of other body types by splattering their pages with headlines like, “Curvy Girls are Hot Too!” WOW! You don’t say?! Am I the only one who finds it irritating that instead of just incorporating women who have curves or who are bigger than a size four into a regular issue or article they have to have one all to themselves? Let’s show everyone how accepting we are of “fat chicks” by giving them a whole page to themselves and highlighting what a different breed they are! Okay, so actually I’m getting a little off topic here. The point of this post really isn’t to rant about the ridiculousness of the standard of beauty the media holds. So moving right along…what spurred this particular post is all of the random images people have been posting on Facebook in the last little while, all glorifying what they like to call “REAL” women. I’m sure by now you’ve all seen some sort of variation of this photo: [...]

  8. agree with josh.
    fat chick propaganda indeed.

and to hana may: totally irrelevant. plenty of skinny attractive women are attracted to overweight successful men. unfortunately it doesnt work in reverse.

  9. Hana May

Besides all the absolute ridiculousness of his comment and not to mention the fact no one is remotely fat in the images above–if you’re going to call the kettle black you better not be a pot.

  10. Hana May

@Alexi I’m not sure why they are all white. I didn’t make the image. But women of all colors shapes and sizes are beautiful.

  11. Hana May

@Jess I think the point is unhealthy isn’t beautiful

  12. reminder that it’s 2012 and we’re still discussing the definition of beauty, at the expense of every woman involved. that being said, i would still prefer the company of a moral and just person than an ignorant oppressor, regardless of their shape and weight.

  13. [...] Bild: When did this become hotter than this? [...]

  14. Fat chick propaganda? You’re totally right marylin Monroe is sooooooo fat!!!!!!!!! Really get some glasses dude cause I think you need some -.- and also this picture only shows that any woman CAN be pretty on her own way not only anorexique standards is pretty you know

  15. I think this is bullshit. To me, a 20-year-old college student, the women on the bottom are far more attractive than the ones on the top. Maybe I’m just a guy who likes curves and whatnot, but I think any sort of ribs or bones showing is disgusting.

  16. none of the women in the image are fat.the first set are cute little rails and the second have beautiful curves. but thats not the point. fat women use this image to defend their weight. they are comparing themselve to marilyn LOL. fatties who use this image are delusional.

  17. [...] This hurts women not only because we are bombarded and brainwashed with media images every day that constantly tell us that “thin is in,” but also because the contemporary woman often associates the word thin with success, and even with a certain level of glamour. The modern woman’s role is shifting. Many of us pursue a career, an education, volunteer opportunities, and more. We travel. We drive expensive cars and buy expensive clothing. To us, the thin woman seems more avant-garde, more stylish and chic. We’ve come a long way, and this image seems like a far step from the matronly Martha or Monroe. [...]

  18. I am a member of the group behind this fat chick propaganda. We are The Illuminati of chubbiness. We are coming for your wives and daughters with cake and size 14 jeans.

  19. I just want to know who would ever call any of those models on the bottom half of this picture fat? Really? I have been a fitness instructor for nearly ten years and I would send someone to a shrink before I would let them look like the ones on the top. Even the really thin girls I have work with me are working hard to develop nice butts and lats so they can have more curves! Give me a break “fat chick” propaganda.

  20. I love that pic! I am 43 and have seen this get worse and worse since the 70′s. Hollywood sexy looks like the physique of a 14 year old boy with bolt on fake tits. Ugh! No real men like that. It is no coincidence that a guy who really likes women at size 0 (or whatever) also often has very feminine tendencies (might be a repressed bi-sexual). Josh, wipe that semen off your chin, you don’t like woman anyways.
Women – please work out and EAT! We love your curves!!

  21. This is RIDICULOUS! Only Marilyn is not as this as the above pictures. The rest; Bettie, Shirley and Elisabeth are EXACTLY as thin, it is just that they are portraied by photogrophers with lots of make up. Marilyn Monroe had done PLASTIC SURGERY both in her face and her breasts. Do you really think a pin up girl is a HEALTHY ideal for women?!! The message of this stupid post is that it is “healthy” to have bigger breasts and “healthy” not to have abs. How the fuck is that healthy? Very healthy to give girls complex and to feel the need to get bigger breasts and to always smack on 5 kg’s of make up. All theese women have exactly the same BMI except for Marilyn. But who’s to say that Marilyn is “healthier” than a fit Keira Knightley??

  22. AA get so annoyed reading the other comments. “Curves”. I HAVE A CURVY, HOUR GLASS FIGURE AND THAT DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE ME HEALTHIER THAN A GIRL WHO IS N A T U R A L L Y SHAPED LIKE TWIGGY!! It is JUST as horrible to say that curves is better than for example Keira Knightley as it would be to say that Keira Knightley is better than Jennifer Lopez. Jesus christ!! Don’t you think slender women have hearts too?!! Keira is a fucking BEAUTIFUL woman and the people who puts this image on facebook is obviously very jealous of her! How else can it be that you cannot ACCEPT that women like this are successful?!! Do you have to be confirmed that they are UGLY to feel better?! This is so, so wrong. You can be pear shaped, you can be apple shaped, you can have an hour glass figure like me and it is all bloody natural. It is also SOOOO much healthier to be a slender girl who is STRONG, have muscles, have abs and a strong body, to be able to carry things and run and so on and then end up looking like Keira Knightley – than to stop working out and eat at Mc Donalds every day.

I love you Audrey Hepburn was conveniently left out of the bottom row, as if there weren’t any skinny women back then. And that Beyonce was left out of the top row, as if there aren’t any curvy women now. Let’s face the facts that women come in all shapes and sizes and they always have and you saying that one is better than another makes you as much a part of the problem as anybody else.

I happen to be one of those very slender women and I can eat cheeseburgers and brownies all day. My best friend is very curvy and we both love and respect that about each other. We accept ourselves and each other for what we are and know what our strengths and weaknesses are with our body types. There is no right or wrong body types, only different ones. And your hatred of what is different is wrong.

What is right, however, is accepting your and other’s body types for what they are. Healthy is sexy. Not skinny, not curvy, not any specific type. Just healthy. If you’re healthy at 105 lbs or at 170 lbs, then you’re healthy. Anybody who tries to put someone down for what they look like because you want them to conform to your standard of beauty can go suck a bag of dicks.

I would also like to point out that Marilyn wasn’t as big as you would like to believe. She was at most, 120 lbs. Oh goodness, she was a skinny lady. Who just happened to have big boobs and a butt. Most of the women on the top row are also that weight, but proportioned differently.

  25. [...] help but focus our attention (and ire) on the fact that female standards of beauty have taken a century-long turn for the skinnier, skinnier and skin-and-bones-ier. No horse hips to be found on strippers these days! [...]
