Is there anything (brand, store anything) you’re not a part of, which you’d like to be?

If time permitted, I’d love so many things. Re-launching a company that is well know globally, like a Payless or Ford. Why can’t they make a car that looks good that someone like me would buy? They don’t have it right at all. They don’t have one car anyone I know would buy. Outside of a daunting task like that, I am looking into developing some properties in LA and Toronto—sort of a full-service apartment building. Nothing bigger than 30 units. Make sure all the details are a hundred per cent spot on.

You’re someone with good style and a clear vision, but being involved with so many outlets and brands, how do you maintain control over the image and keep a consistent look and feel?

It goes back to the people you have on your team, the people around you and the plan you have in place. I have amazing people working around me. They know where we need to take the brands, stores and projects. I couldn’t do half of what I have going on without my crew.

What’s the best business decision you’ve made?

Since opening the first Goodfoot store in 2002, I learned that I have to follow my gut and never make decisions based on ego, greed or the even bottom line. My single best business decision to date was to move to the US, splitting my time in LA and Toronto. I have found people embrace people who work hard stateside.

You’ve said that you’re a bit of a cowboy when it comes to new opportunities. What would you say is a choice you made that maybe wasn’t the best?

Tough question, as I tend to be extremely hard on myself and the business decisions I make. I would say trying to do everything at once is sometimes my downfall. Not enough time in the day to do everything.

Is style something you’re born with or something that can be learned?

Best thing about style is it consistently changes and is refined. Everyone has a style some more aesthetic pleasing than others. Ha.

What are you usually reading?

Newspapers, news headlines via bloglines and a good book or two. I actually usually read two books simultaneously—keeps me on my toes, and who wants to read a book on Chairman Mao every day until it’s finished? Have to keep it fresh.

Where’s your heart at?

Success in all facets for myself and the people around me.
