Olympia, Washington is best known for being the four block town that birthed a dozen Riot Grrrls and kick started the third-wave feminist movement. It's also known for it's delicious pizza and being ripe with totally boring, West Coast college town vibes. Great things come out of this unassuming town and the latest is the three-piece band, Broken Water. This fall Broken Water will embark on a scattered U.S. tour to promote their perfectly titled LP, Whet (Night People Records) which is a dark orchestration of smoke-thick drums and flowing, subdued howls. The reverb-heavy guitar riffs are constantly climbing through the seething bass lines recalling a weird long-lost Sonic Youth song that probably never left Thurston Moore's head. Tracks like "Memory" (which is featured on our upcoming hearty mix) and "Say What's On Your Mind" leave you mesmerized--ears ringing for days, in a dreamy head rush, while "Spore" features an unlikely saxophone melody. Whet is inventive and soothing. The perfect fall record. Check Broken Water's tour dates here.
