News__ Who is Cindy Sherman?

September 30, 2011 | By

Cindy Sherman is a photographer and her own model, make-up artist, hairdresser, set designer, and stylist.

For over 30 years, conceptual artist Cindy Sherman has photographed herself as everybody else. Beginning this February, the MOMA will be holding a retrospective of Sherman's extensive collection of portraits in an exploration of the dominant themes of her career: artifice, horror, myth, carnival, and gender and class identity.

With guises and personas, extensive wardrobes, heavy make-up and wigs, Sherman has altered her physique to transform herself into a siren, a clergyman, a clown, a stay-at-home mom, and then an aging socialite. Her work raises tough questions about women’s roles and identities, and society’s obsession with youth, status, and femininity.

Cindy Sherman’s Retrospective will be at the MOMA from February 26-June 11, 2012. Until then, see some of her work below.
