18 year-old Constance McMillen petitioned against the rules of her school's prom when she found out she was not permitted to bring her lesbian girlfriend to the event. Constance was also told she could not wear a tuxedo. In response, the Mississippi chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and Itawamba County School District canceled the prom all together. The school board encouraged the students to have a private prom instead.

"Oh, my God. That's really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one," Constance said. "A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this."

The emotional weight of that last statement should be enough for the school board to realize what an illogical, homophobic rule they are enforcing. As comedian David Cross pointed out in his comedy special almost ten years ago: in Texas having sex with your consenting, gay partner is illegal, but screwing your family pet--totally 100% legit.

A lesbian in a tuxedo? Cause for concern. Straight dude with a gun. No problem.
