News__ New Die Antwoord Video

October 07, 2010 | By

If you know Die Antwoord, then you probably won't be shocked by their new video for "Evil Boy." The video for the Diplo-produced track features a barrage of phallic symbols, menacing creatures, and eyes-for-nipples. Known for their Zef counter culture style, Yo-Landi Vi$$er's coat is like a Cruella De Vil piece from the underworld--fashioned with fake and live rats. This isn’t necessarily a new technique for the South African trio, but the imagery paired with some lyrics that come off as being pretty blatantly anti-gay make for a jaw-dropping viewing experience.

When you watch the video you'll notice guest emcee Wanga's Xhosa lyrics translated into English subtitles, which refer to his refusal to participate in a ritual circumcision considered mandatory in his ethnic group in South Africa (Ouch!).  For refusing to participate, members of his community challenge his essential "manhood" and accuse him of being gay. Regardless of the implications of the lyrics and imagery, the production quality and sexy-seedy-paranormal aesthetic paired with a cameo by the beloved head of Mad Decent (Hi Diplo!) show the rising clout of a group once considered a parody.

If you missed their sets at Coachella and Hard Fest this summer, get more of the Zef Rave sound from Emcee Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek on their North American fall tour that coincides with the upcoming release of their debut album, $O$.
