News__ Google’s New Fashion Site

November 17, 2010 | By

There's a new store on the virtual shopping block, that's bigger and smarter than any of the other shops. Google launches, Boutiques.com, a new shopping site. And even though Google may seem like a weird match for fashion, they have enlisted professionals on both the fashion and tech sides to ensure credibilty.

Boutiques.com allows you to shop at celebrities, designer or blogger curated boutiques, by trend or by item. New visitors can even answer a few questions in the form of a style quiz, which will help tailor your shopping experience. "In simple terms, what the style experts did was come up with about 500 words for color, shape and pattern — robin’s egg blue, for instance, and gingham — and then the engineers trained the algorithm to know what each was," Cathy Horyn of The New York Times said after meeting with Munjal Shah, the man who created the technology. "They would have pictures of what gingham was and what gingham wasn’t."

We tried Boutiques.com out a little bit and found that there are tons of items to search and choose from--some we're great, some missed the mark. We also tried to see about purchasing a few items, and once we were redirected for the purchase, the items were actually sold out. So, while there are still a few kinks to work out and necessary time for the user to, well, get used to it, Boutiques.com has already changed how we search, buy and shop online.

Check out Boutiques.com here and let us know what you think.
