News__ Andre 3000 to play Jimi Hendrix
Andre 3000’s got some big Hendrix shoes to fill, but when?
There's been lots of rumors flying around about Andre 3000 playing Jimi Hendrix in a new biopic. And now it's for sure. The Irish Film & Television Network has confirmed that Mr. 3000 is set to play Hendrix in an upcoming biopic called All by My Side, to be directed by John Ridley (screenwriter behind U-Turn) and produced by Darko Entertainment, Subotica Entertaiment and Matador Pictures. The film will focus on Hendrix’s breakthrough moments in London in 1966 and 1967, and use archival footage from Hendrix's days.
All by My Side is an ambitious project that Hendrix's legacy deserves, but there are problems. Experience Hendrix, LLC--the family-owned company that holds all the rights for Hendrix's music--hasn't signed off on the project. They are refusing to let the film companies use Hendrix's original music in the soundtrack without their approval. On Thursday, May 10th they said in a statement: "Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation."
Sounds like someone's feeling a little uninvited to the party. Clearly, they do not want this thing to happen without their approval. So now, the whole project is a little rocky. Will a biopic about Jimi be made without his actual music? Will the project be indefinitely postponed until the production companies and Experience Hendrix reach a comfortable agreement? What sort of role (and paycheck) will Experience Hendrix, LLC require to get this thing going?
