You don’t have to speak French to design for a prestigious Parisian label

Those that may have been surprised when Opening Ceremony founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim were assigned the role of designing their first line for Kenzo, became starry eyed watching their s/s ’12 trailer this fall, Kenzonique. A Miss Kenzo stomping past fish, fireworks, and flowers and the fashion industry knew that, "Yep--this is definitely going to be interesting." (In case you missed it watch the Kenzo Kenzonique video here.)

But when you consider it, the two companies aren’t so different when it comes to attitude. Kenzo Takada’s label took off in Paris in the 1970s with a good dose of playful. Kenzo's 1978 and 1979 collection shows were held in a circus tent, finished off with the designer riding on an elephant. Decades later, the O.C. duo is injecting some of this sass back into the brand.

For spring/summer 2012 fisherman’s nets and birds have more in common than just a mutual interest in ocean life, they’re the pattern of choice for textiles. The collection features super electric colorblocking in blue, green, and orange radiate on some seriously jaunty street wear: biker jackets, baseball caps, weird tubular accessories, and spring layers. It’s what we could hope for and more from the Howard Street, New York trip to Paris.
