Lars Von Trier's new film Melancholia, stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and Alexander Skasgard

Melancholia is the name of Lars Von Trier's newest feature film. It's about the end of the world, but not about the end of the world. A planet is definitely going to hit the Earth, but the film is more about how two sisters, played by Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, react to the catastrophe. According to the trailer, Dunst's character reaction is to lie naked by a waterfall. Gainsbourg tries to outrun the apocalypse in a golf cart. What would you do? (Our vote is for naked plus golf cart.)

"Naked" is a bit of a specialty for Danish filmmaker, Lars Von Trier. In 1998, his film production company, Zentropa, became the first mainstream enterprise to make hardcore pornography. The porn became famous for its art-house style and being geared towards a female audience. Europeans were delighted! Women on slow Sunday afternoons were delighted! Cosmopolitan ranked Pink Prison as 2009's best porno. And then he made Antichrist wherein Charlotte Gainsbourg pulverizes her husband's penis, among other violent-sexual activities, in a backwoods cabin. Critics called it "torture-porn" and some even wondered why he made the film in the first place. Sexual, yes, but not exactly sexy.

While Melancholia doesn't seem quite so intense, Von Trier might be hoping to evoke  a similar discomfort from his audience. The characters, this time, will be tortured emotionally, rather than physically. As far as we know, the penises of supporting actors Kiefer Sutherland and Alexander Skarsgard remain intact until they explode with the rest of the world.

Watch the newly releases trailer for Melancholia below and look out for the film's public release sometime after it premieres at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
