News__ Som Autumn Mix

November 18, 2010 | By

Peter Som's fall 2010 collection was an eclectic, if not completely schizophrenic, parade of clashing fabrics, colors and prints. You know that part in Girl Talk's Night Ripper where "Tiny Dancer" blends into "Juicy" and it's weird but it actually works really well? That was what Som did but with clothes. The warm weather has disappeared so it's time to layer up and try some of the Som style. Check out the runway images above for inspiration and try out these other combos below.

This combo works best when the prints are different sizes. Micro floral graphics with a chunky plaid coat keeps the looks distinctive from each other. Keep the color palette the same to give the outfit an aura of intentionality, as opposed to crazy lady. Nothing's crazy about these deep blues.

pacsun, sound & matter floral dress, $30; fidelity sportswear, plaid short duffle cape, $268; urban outfitters, kimchi blue reptile bag, $40

Stripes are instantly chic yet casual. Put them together and it only amplifies the effect. From thick verticals to zigzagged prints, there are so many varieties out there to keep the look fresh. We also love how the Wildfox's diamond graphic mimics the stripe theme. Plus if you lose your pants, these Rag & Bone undies save your ass, literally.

Alexander Wang, velvet collarless blazer, $1,235; Wildfox, big diamond cut off tank, $64; Sass & Bide, all of me/printed pant, $220; Marc by Marc Jacobs, saddlery striped lou lou satchel, $528; Rag & Bone, striped boy shorts, $55

Basic black jeans are the stabilizer for this dizzying communion of brocade and polka dots. The patterns stand out best when the palette is kept monochromatic, but we added a dash of purple and gold to liven things up. Accessories add as much pattern diversity as clothing so take note of how the blazer and tank are echoed in the bangles and shoes to give the juxtaposition more depth. Lastly, this Matthew Williamson clutch combines embossed leather with polka dotted studs which proves that sometimes a good investment piece (to say the least!) does the work for you.

Piperlime, Hy & dot studded tank, $92; Elizabeth & James, Brocade blazer, $625; Marc by Marc Jacobs, Mid-rise legging-style jeans, $230; Dr. Martins, Pascal polka dot boot, $150; ASOS, floral embossed metal bangles, $14; Matthew Williamson, embossed studded clutch, $1,795

Dangerous, yet classy, the mixture of animal prints is not for the faint of heart. The snaky accessories add a slickness to this furry Topshop coat and the purpley-pink reinterpretation of leopard on the dress makes the print unexpected and fresh. There are so many great snake accessories out there it was hard to choose, but we couldn't resist this Betsey Johnson bracelet glittered with gold.

Zimmermann, Poppy leopard T dress, $195; Topshop, Leopard vintage faux fur coat, $200; Elizabeth and James, Snake-effect leather pumps, $395; Mango, Bolero snake effect flap chain strap bag, $69; Betsey Johnson, Jungle fever snake cuff bracelet, $79
