Humanizing the riot

Last Night Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer aired on HBO. The documentary revolves around the three members of Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot who were jailed last year following a guerilla performance in a Russian Orthodox church. During the highly public trials that left two of three members in penal colonies the world became familiarized with their pastel-colored balaclava-clad faces. This documentary removes those symbolic articles of clothing--the wearing of which the Russian government has since ruled illegal--to reveal the essential, durable, and playful connection between three women.

Maxim Pozdorovkin and Mike Lerner's film depicts Nadia, Katya and Masha in their most complete, human lights with as much attention given to moments of tenderness between friends as to brave statements they made in court against patriarchy, censorship and the bind between Church and State in Putin's Russia. The most resounding message of the film, and of a surprise appearance made by two Pussy Riot members at the premiere in New York City was that of love. Not only for each other, but for their country and Russian culture as well.
