News__ The “Slutty Gene”

December 02, 2010 | By

Next time you have a one night stand or feel the urge to go all infidelity on your hubby, just blame your genes. Scientists have found a gene that links to sexual promiscuity. The dopamine receptor gene DRD4,  now being referred to as the 'slutty gene,' is linked to promiscuous activity. "Individuals with a certain variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity," Justin Garcia, of the Binghamton University stated. We, however wonder why non-gendered yet "negative" acts, like random sex and adultery, are immediately linked to the word 'slut.' Why not call this the 'promiscuous gene'?

No matter what the name, having this gene doesn't let you off the cheating hook. "Not everyone with this genotype will have one-night stands or commit infidelity. Indeed, many people without this genotype still have one-night stands and commit infidelity. The study merely suggests that a much higher proportion of those with this genetic type are likely to engage in these behaviors." DRD4 gene, cheat with it, cheat without it.
