Abbie_Calvert_Photography

Every Saturday we select a photo from our Flickr pool to be featured on hearty Abbie Calvert is a 24-year-old photographer from Tasmania, Australia. Abbie grew up on a peninsula, surrounded by the roaring Southern Ocean, which "has shaped who I am and  is featured in many of my photographs (including this one)," she says. "I am interested in peoples’ fragile interaction with the environment, and many of my photographs are self portraits exploring my own sense of belonging to a natural environment." This photo is a part of a series she calls For One Small Moment I Possessed a Fragile Sense of Place. To see more of Abbie's work please check out her Flickr, blog and site. Shakuhachi S/S ’13

Monday, February 11th, 2013
Work that red pout Spring/summer 2013 from Shakuhachi is a bright, wearable collection from down under. Comprised of ethereal prints and stand-out colors typical of the recognizable Aussie brand, this season's collection also includes dark leathers, embellishment and strappy sandle heel creations. Straps are prevalent in the pieces as well-- a particularly hot little black dress hosts a strappy black bustier and a white, strapped, knitted sweater thing obscures an even strappier bra (how many times can we say strappy in one sentence?). The gypsy/hippie-esque prints steal the show. But the real class acts, are a tangerine asymmetrical dress and a midriff bearing Elton-John inspired gold and white beauty. The lookbook is cool too. Check out the Shakuhachi s/s '13 collection below.

[Pitchfork] You all need to go and read about New York folk legend Karen Dalton right now and then download all her songs, but listen to this one, like, NOW. [The Guardian] New podcast Vicious Visions from our favorite St. Louis bass player, Ashley Hohman. [Garage Punk] Kim Deal has a new series of solo 7 inch records. Get it now. [Kim Deal] New Sky Ferreira video. [Hey Reverb]

Google Goes Deep

Monday, October 1st, 2012
Google captures the ocean's "street views" With custom-designed cameras, inspired by sharks (seriously), Google brings interactive panoramic views of the ocean to your screen. This isn't a screensaver of fish swimming around. It's a real look at waters around Hawaii, the Philippines and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The underwater "street view" project is part of a partnership with Catlin Seaview Survey which is "a game-changing scientific study of coral reefs." They hope Google will help mainstream their quest to protect the world's coral reefs. If we feel connected to the water, maybe we'll pay more attention to how we can help sustain those endangered aquatic environments. Check out this video about Google's underwater street views. You should also check out this blog by Jon Rafman full of unexpected Google street view captures.
