Cindy Sherman gets her Chanel on at the Metro Pictures Gallery Cindy Sherman is making everyone else look lazy. You would think the acclaimed artist, who is her own photographer, model, and makeup artist, would be busy enough with her Retrospective at the MOMA. Instead Sherman has welcomed a second show of the year in New York at Metro Pictures, which in typical Sherman fashion, features herself, and even better: herself in Chanel haute couture. Sherman is no stranger to the Metro Pictures walls--her work was featured in the gallery's opening exhibit in 1980. Her new larger than life scale works which are currently on display, show female characters (all Sherman) gazing out at the viewer create an eerily surreal scene. The manipulated backgrounds lend a painting like quality to the work. We feel like Coco would be proud. Cindy Sherman's work will be on display at the Metro Picture Gallery until June 9. See some of the photographs below.
Cindy Sherman has photographed herself as everybody else. Beginning this February, the MOMA will be holding a retrospective of Sherman's extensive collection of portraits in an exploration of the dominant themes of her career: artifice, horror, myth, carnival, and gender and class identity. With guises and personas, extensive wardrobes, heavy make-up and wigs, Sherman has altered her physique to transform herself into a siren, a clergyman, a clown, a stay-at-home mom, and then an aging socialite. Her work raises tough questions about women’s roles and identities, and society’s obsession with youth, status, and femininity. Cindy Sherman’s Retrospective will be at the MOMA from February 26-June 11, 2012. Until then, see some of her work below.
Get your self-portrait on with Cindy Sherman's MAC Colour Collection MAC is really killing it this summer. First they announced a Gareth Pugh collaboration, then threw together the unlikely duo of Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin (hello dream foster parents!) and now they've announced a limited edition collection with photographer, Cindy Sherman. Sherman is one of the most famous photographers in the whole world, if not the highest paid one. Alone in her studio, she transforms herself into other characters using lighting, camera angles, costumes and cosmetics. The concept of a makeup collaboration with Cindy Sherman is so clever that it's surprising no one has thought of it before. Launching at the end of September, the Cindy Sherman Color Collection features bold and vibrant lipsticks, eyeshadows, chromographic pencils and loose pigments. Some of our favorites include Show Orchid hot pink lipstick, Royale matte violet eyeshadow and the High-Def Cyan pencil. In her three promo shots (including the one pictured above) Sherman uses the makeup in some pretty innovative ways. Who else could pull off bruise-colored contours? To get your cosmetic creative juices flowing, we've rounded up a few of Cindy Sherman's photos for you to browse (see below). The limited edition collection ends right before Halloween. Coincidence? We think not.
