Q+A: Claw Money Duets Show

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Let's go half on a... Two is better than one, so the saying goes. Taking this notion and creating with it, graffiti artist Claw Money has paired up with some of her favorite artists and friends (like Baron Von Fancy and UTAH) to present Duets an exhibition of collaborative works by CLAWMONEY aka Claudia Gold. We caught up with her to chat about the show, favorite collabs and Bing Crosby in our Q+A below. Duets 235 Eldridge Street, New York January 24 to March 3 Hey Claw, what's up? Working hard on all sorts of art stuff, expanding our clothing line and well, motherhood. How have you been spending your days? I am at the studio (we call it the "Clawffice"), getting ready for a full assault of new products for 2013. Super busy and hectic but the brand keeps growing and this is our 10th year, so we really have to come out with some amazing stuff. Your art show is called Duets what is your favorite musical duets of all time? Favorite musical duet would have to be David Bowie and Bing Crosby. When I was young, I thought - wow, so weird and yet so smart. If you had perform a karaoke duet, who would you choose as your partner? I would choose Minya Quirk as my karaoke partner. She has an amazing voice and of course is a hit at any and every party. You've worked on a lot of collaborations what's been your favorite? I love collabs! I guess my favorite would have to be my Nascar collabo--it was just so over the top and brought the CLAW to a whole new audience. Plus it is on a vehicle that drives over 100 miles an hour - hotness! What is a collab you'd like to work on? I would love to collab with something very unexpected like couture or electronics. We have some stuff in the works - so look out! Tell us about the collaborations that will be in the show? This was an interesting process. First I cut and screened all the canvases. Then passed them to the 10 selected artists - Aroe, Baron von Fancy, Ces, Jesse, Jick, Lydiaemily, MRS, Utah, West and Yes2 and told them to do whatever they want. Then after I got those back I repainted over their work and my original screen print. How were the artists selected? I have so many talented friends so why not showcase them? Another Claw show - boring! I really love working with other people and you get a really unexpected result which is a challenge to both artists. xoxoxo-c Duets opening reception is tonight (January 24)  from 6-9pm and the show will run until March 3.

Hedi Slimane X Grimes

Thursday, September 20th, 2012
Jewelled Bindis from Saint Laurent Paris? Someone tell Hedi we approve. Hedi Slimane is at the helm of a complete overhaul of Yves Saint Laurent. Now Saint Laurent Paris is set to lead a fashion revolution, according to Slimane's aspirations, that will catapult the brand into the same ballpark as Chanel and Dior. With plans to open 15 new stores around the world, move back into Couture, release a new identity in RTW collections and rework classic pieces, its a wonder SLP's new Creative Director ever has time to pick up a camera anymore. But this week photos of Claire Boucher a.k.a. Grimes surfaced on his blog, and it appears as though a budding friendship is growing between the creative director and musician. This is the second time the two have worked together, Slimane shot Boucher for the cover of Dazed and Confused's April issue. Clad in metal nameplates, flatbrim hats and  dirty fingernails, we wonder if the street aesthetic of the shoot says anything about the new direction he will take the iconic fashion house. If anything, it's refreshing to see a label with the high fashion reputation Saint Laurent has, investing in young artists as talented and off-kilter as Grimes. Keep it coming. See the full series of Hedi Slimane's latest photos of Grimes below.

Brits on Brits on Brits British model Agyness Deyn has been the face of Doc Martens for a few campaigns now, but this time she's fronting her own designs for the label. And while it's not the most surprising collaboration we've seen yet, we are intrigued by the campaign video, which is less about the clothes and more about capturing the brand's inimitable spirit and tying that in with the UK model.

The plot loosely follows a road trip. Aggy and her gal pal hop in a car, spray paint a wall in an abandoned building,  pool hop in their clothes, ramble through desolate California and dye each other's hair. Just another Saturday hanging out around town, right? The disenchanted youth tip is a little past relevant for a 29-year-old super model, but the film encompasses a beautiful aesthetic, and the clothes had us pausing the film to stare a little closer. It's Brad Pitt/Juliette Lewis and Johnny Depp/Winona Ryder circa '90s re-invented. And judging from our pauses, that means grunge-ified quilted jackets, plaid jumpers, and daisy prints. Oh yeah, and boots.

Check out Agyness Deyn for Dr. Martens's teaser campaign video below.

Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012
The Yayoi Kusama for Louis Vuitton collection hits stores tomorrow If you've recently happened to walk along 57th Street past the Louis Vuitton flagship, you will have noticed the spots that have taken over the outside of the store. Sweeping arks of sheer polka dots cover the glass storefront, which sits on the corner of 5th Avenue. The decorative dots aren't just another one of their elaborate window displays, they're part of Louis Vuitton's latest collaboration with Yayoi Kusama. Set to hit stores tomorrow (July 11) we gave you a preview of the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama lookbook in June. Now we have full product shots of the collaboration which includes shoes, bags, dresses and accessories all in the vein of Yayoi  Kusama’s aesthetic. Louis Vuitton is also sponsoring Yayoi Kusama's retrospective at the Whitney. Preview our favorites from the new Louis Vuitton collection by Yayoi Kusama below.

Yayoi Kusama & Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama make fashion that look so good we get dizzy The new collaboration, titled "Infinitely Kusama," between Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and Louis Vuitton has us reeling. The endlessly spotty and dotty collection includes tops, skirts, shoes, and accessories, clad with the multimedia artist's signature dot patterns in her trademark colors--primary ones. The silhouettes are classy and tailored, contrasting Kusama's wild textiles. Then there are soft, draping dresses, ultra ladylike pleated skirts to play up some powerful heels. Like a cheetah's spots, we'd wear these pieces to confuse and capture our prey. The line will be available online July 10, and don't miss Yayoi Kusama's retrospective at the Whitney Museum two days later. You could even wear a piece from the collection and blend in with the paintings. Check out the look book below. Spotted (pun intended!) via: Huh.
