Kim Gordon X Sportmax

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Founding bass player of Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon, has teamed up with Sportmax to design a capsule collection. The line will include a tee, tunic and dress, but will this be a throw back to her infamous late 90’s line, X Girl? Somehow, we doubt it since Kim Gordon’s work with Sportmax will be inspired by nature and abstract water colors. Even though, Gordon has been involved in fashion for over ten years–arguably, she has been a muse since the days of Daydream Nation–Kim doesn’t identify as a “designer” (or “musician” for that matter). “I’m an artist,” said Kim. “I’m really interested in how fashion works for people in different ways. It is mostly marketing and branding, kind of how you can put on a dress and something can make you feel good, but it doesn’t add anything to you, unless it’s building an image.”

The collection will debut at the New York SoHo Sportmax store for Fashion Night Out on September 10, where Kim’s husband and band mate, Thurston flannel-lean-and-tall Moore will be DJing. “I’m a little nervous because I don’t love big parties,” she says. “But I’m curious about how it’s all going to be set up and look like.” Yeah, us too.

ICONIC ELAINE

Friday, August 20th, 2010

According to The New York Times, if you pair leather with floral or cowboy boots with a blazer you are part of the Elaine Benes come-back. But, maybe it has more to do with the whole 90s revival that has taken over 2010, rather than the fact that Ms. Benes could actually be considered a fashion icon. Or could she be?

“Elaine has stood out as a beacon of a faded era, in long floral skirts, blazers with padded shoulders and granny shoes with socks. Just about every inch of her skin was covered as if she were photosensitive,” The New york times article says. Elaine was the quintessential guys-best-friend with her strong, no-bullshit attitude and her tell-all approach towards sex. She wasn’t your stereotypical woman, however when she needed to turn on the charm–she did. “She was one of the guys,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus told The New York Times. “It wasn’t about trying to look sexy. It was about looking like a girl who pushes people around.” The Elaine look was an amalgamation of so many classic trends: “early American settler, gypsy, business casual, pious zealot.”

Anne Slowly of Elle called the Elaine-look, “Upper West Side grunge.” While fashion stylist, Mel Ottenberg noted, ““Girls who were obsessed with micro-minis are now so anti-that, and they’re embarrassed at what they were wearing two years ago. This is a more covered-up look and looking like you have a brain. Elaine had a job. She worked at J. Peterman. She was a go-getter.”

Could it just be that a floral dress with lace-up boots and leather is perfect marriage of tough and sweet? Or is the Elaine Benes Look really something girls are after? If George Costanza can inspire fashion, then the latter might makes sense.

MARC JACOBS PLUS MORE

Monday, August 9th, 2010

According to The Daily Mail (and Robert Duffy’s Twitter), Marc Jacobs is gearing up to be “the first top fashion designer” to create a line of plus sized fashions. The fashion house is currently putting the project in the works by figuring out how much demand there is for sizes over 14. However, this is just hearsay as Duffy (who is the president of Marc Jacob’s label) leaked the news on his Twitter before anything official had been confirmed. We guess the dude was just really excited about being able to share his personal struggle with diets, clothing and fitting into the mold.

“I’m a big guy 6′4″ 210 lbs,” he said. “Not easy for me to find clothes. Of course I can have them made. I know how everyone feels. I try to diet but…”

Marc Jacobs has been known to branch out in the past, creating a children’s line, Little Marc Jacobs, Bark Jacobs dog accessories and during New York Fashion Week, Book Marc, a book shop. So, creating a plus size line wouldn’t be so out of character.

Total Chaos?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Model-turned-designer, Erin Wasson recently ended her collaborative relationship with Costa Mesa, California-based surf and skate brand RVCA. (A bit surprising seeing as we just saw pretty images from the Fall ‘10 lookbook.) According to Fashionista, Wasson’s first few collections were well received, but her Fall 2010 runway show gained the opposite response. However, some inside sources at RVCA (and who doesn’t love “inside sources”?) say the company dropped Wasson because her team was too hard to work with. “Total chaos and the epitome of unorganized,” according to one person Fashionista spoke with. Even though we loved the clothes, we can’t say we are surprised considering Wasson once stated on Nylon TV that, “People with the best style are the ones who are the poorest. When I go down to Venice Beach and I see the homeless I’m like, ‘Oh my god, they are pulling out, like, crazy looks! They pulled shit out of, like, garbage cans!” If that sentence wasn’t total f–king chaos, we don’t know what is.

It appears that RVCA (which was bought out by Billabong two weeks ago) will be focusing their upcoming collaborations with Rumi Neely or the “poor man’s Erin Wasson.” Wonder how Neely feels about how bitching bums look when they are pan handling to save their lives?

MEET JEN FROM GNARLITUDE

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Jen Hanley describes herself as a “27 year old financially secure french sex maniac ex-model junkie alcoholic insomniac house guest” but now the storm has calmed. She lives on the beach with her husband, who is a taxidermist (seriously), and her Boston Terrier, Nico. Jen runs the fashion blog, Gnarlitude, which she refers to as “Sleep Deprivation and Stories Of My Bullshit Youth.” She also writes for the Urban Outfitters blog, Street Carnage & TV Boners, AnOther Magazine and Sex Savages on Wheels–a website she started with her friend and ex-dive bar co-worker, Cass, dedicated to their common love of motor bike culture. She’s got a great sense of style and even better taste in music. We decided to pick her brain.
