Return of Elsa Schiaparelli

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

The queen is back to try and take the fashion throne

Elsa Schiaparelli made a name for herself way back in the 1920s. By the 1930s, her bold, bright designs were coveted by fashionistas (they didn’t use that word back then) all over Europe–perhaps even more so than Coco Chanel’s. However, the brand closed its doors in 1954. Now, for the first time in almost sixty years, the Schiaparelli name will be revamped, modernized, and kick-started.

So far, Schiaparelli’s owner, Diego Della Valle, has hired French model and actress Farida Khelfa to be the voice of the company. He is still on the lookout for a lead designer, but has already revealed that a line of accessories, fragrances and cosmetics is in the works for winter 2013. It’s perfect timing, really–Elsa Schiaparelli is currently exhibited with Miuccia Prada in The Costume Institute’s 2012 exhibition, “Impossible Conversations,” which opens tomorrow (May 10).

Dior F/W ’12 Secret Garden Video

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Dior takes us to the secret garden of Versailles. Spoiler alert: lots of fashion there.

Never shying away from elegance and luxury, Christian Dior’s latest short film “Secret Garden – Versailles” is a stunning showcase of the fall/winter 2012 collection. Set in Versailles’ full decadence and glory, the film follows models Daria Strokous, Melissa Stasiuk and Xiao Wen Ju as they effortlessly glide through the French palace’s luxurious halls and expansive gardens. Shot by famed fashion photog duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vindooh Matadin, the season’s floor-length frocks and voluminous shapes dreamily come to life against the gilded backdrop. Set to Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” Secret Garden reignites the brand’s lifelong love affair with the royal palace. Although, this time, Dior leaves a mark of it’s own on this historical French hide- away—the video ends with the models flanking a custom “CD” topiary, the ultimate mark of splendor, as only Dior does it.
