Hyperrealistic Sculptures

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013
Imagine buying this at a garage sale. Wax figurines of celebrities are okay but hyperrealistic sculptures of the average American sunbathing, garage selling or jogging is where it's at. Duane Hanson's sculptures cast in polyester resin, fiberglass, Bondo or bronze are riding their second wave of notoriety in the wake of a move toward hyperrealism. The sculptures rendered by the American artist are sometimes cast from real people and clothed in secondhand (thrifted, shall we say?) clothes. Hanson painted the skin with veins and blemishes making them more expressive than the average wax Oprah. See more of Duane Hanson's sculptures below. Spotted on Lost at E Minor

Crotch Shots

Ho-Ryon Lee gives up-skirt shots an artsy makeover Korean-born and Hong Kong-educated painter Ho-Ryon Lee embraces the playful side of eroticism with his skirt-lifting models. Titled "Overlapping Images," this collection of paintings blurs the line between seduction and voyeurism. Are these images the result of careless adjusting or invitations to peek? Lee creates the effect by photographing several poses, layering them in Photoshop and then recreating the finished image on a canvas with paint. His hyperrealism style, mimicking the original photographs, adds to his art's suggestive nature. See more of Ho-Ryon Lee's "Overlapping Images" below.
