Thierry Lasry x Garrett Leight

Monday, October 7th, 2013
Let's raise our glasses! For Thierry Lasry and Garrett Leight have united to create a rad fall/winter 2013 eyewear collection. The collection brings together cities, with a little Paris from Larsy and a little Los Angeles from Leight. Both Larsy and Leight grew up in inspirating families. Larsy's mother was a designer, father an optician, and Leight is the son of the founders of Oliver People's. Together they've created some nice things. The Thierry Lasry x Garrett Leight f/w '13 collection consists of vintage Anorexxxy rounded glasses in plain black and, for those of you who want to add a little spunk, there are a few with a marble composition, designed by interior designer Kelly Wearstler. Mmmm chili fries... For our latest photo essay feature, Chicago-based photographer Todd Diederich shares snapshots from his recent trip to Compton. No big deal, he just hung out with rappers, drank cough syrup, and learned secret gang-handshakes. What Diederich captures is a Californian landscape that isn’t so much about palm trees and beaches, but rather barking dogs and neck tattoos. Check out our new photo essay feature Going Going Back Back to Cali Cali shot by Todd Diederich here.

Kendrick Lamar Poetic Justice

Friday, February 22nd, 2013
You need to hear this. We mean see this. The video for Kendrick Lamar's "Poetic Justice," ft. Drake off of Good Kid m.A.A.d City is a cinematic tale of love and tragedy. The video pans across LA's iconic Crenshaw neighborhood while Lamar and other Black Hippy members like Dom Kennedy and Jay Rock drink 40's and play dice. Gunfire sends the crowd into a chaotic scramble and Lamar rushes to protect his girl, but to no avail. A shot from above pictures the two lovers laid out on top of each other on the concrete streets. The iPhone in the fallen girl's hand shows a missed call from Drake, who is pictured sitting on a hotel room bed next to a different woman sleeping nude. As a literary device, Poetic justice is the fateful punishment of vice or sin. Where that sin lives in this video is somewhat unclear, but Drake's phone call rings to the girl's phone, implying that the three might have been involved in some kind of love triangle. In this case the graphic portrayal of that poetic justice layers into the connectivity Lamar has been building between film and his critically-acclaimed album. The one stark question that remains after watching it? Whether Drake's eyebrows were always that far apart or not. Watch Kendrick Lamar's "Poetic Justice," ft. Drake below and tell us your thoughts, on Drake brows or otherwise.
