MUCH LOVE FOR MAL-AIMÉE

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Mythic, modern, and French In French, the word combo mal-aimée means 'unloved' in reference to a woman. As you eye over the lookbooks for MAL-AIMÉE's collections, you can't help but wonder why this "woman" would ever go unloved. She dresses in clean and simple lines, half sporty and half romantic, she's never overstated and strikes a perfect balance between androgynous and feminine. She's got it all, so where's the love? Maybe that's not what she's looking for. Designers Léonie Hostettler and Marius Borgeaud are former assistants to Olivier Theyskens and Nina Ricci, and have garnered quite a bit of attention from their young Parisian line, now going into it's second spring/summer season. Working strictly with materials made in France, the two have created a unique interpretation of that ineffable je-ne-sais-quoi French elegance. MAL-AIMÉE s/s '12 works like an archetype for a modern day urban Aphrodite.  They are hints of Grecian silhouettes and inverted triangles throughout, age-old mythic symbols of fertility and feminity. In this version of the myth, Aphrodite is a shape-shifter, sometimes looking firey with trios of primary, and stark white and black, before changing into a more poetic version of herself in magenta and cyan. What's not to love? Check out what we loved most from MAL-AIMÉE's S/S '12 lookbook below.

A closet fit for a museum: You can now cruise through Daphne Guinness' closet Hall of Fame member, socialite, and style muse, the Honorable and honorably excessive Daphne Guinness has her priceless collection of couture on display at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The exhibit features over 100 garments belonging to the platinum-and-black haired enigma, including Alexander McQueen boots, sky-high red heeless shoes by Nina Ricci, and other rarities from Chanel, Gareth Pugh, Oscar de la Renta, and Valentino, to name just a few. “I’m very nervous, I have no idea if people will like it or not like it,” Guinness told WWD,  “I’ve been working on this for two years and it’s been a collaborative effort. This whole experience, putting this together, has been very surreal.” Daphne Guinness at F.I.T. will be on display through January 7, 2012. See into Daphne Guinness' closet a little more below.
