The Weeknd vs. Portishead

Monday, July 15th, 2013
The Weeknd doesn't give a... It'll be interesting to see what happens with all of this in the next few weeks. The Weeknd's new track "Belong To The World" samples Portishead’s “Machine Gun,” but the Canadian singer didn't have permission to use the sample. "I think it's a load of bollox," Portishead lead singer Geoff Barrow tweeted. "When someone asks to sample you and you refuse they should have the respect as a fellow artist to not use it." The Weeknd went ahead and used the sample anyway and even produced this expensive video to go along with it. Oh, were you using that? Barrow says "I don't wanna get paid... I just want my beat back." We'll have to wait and see how everything plays out but until then visit Barrow's Twitter, where he is re-tweeting negative feedback...towards himself. Lolz.

The Weeknd “Twenty Eight”

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013
Abel's got the blues that just won't quit Leave it to Abel Tesfaye to turn shots of beautiful, scantily clad ladies into a huge bummer. The Weekend's new video for his Trilogy bonus track "Twenty", is as somber as his heartbreaking croon. Here we see Abel, who, just like the nude girls being pushed on stage, appears trapped and tired while giving a press interview. Nabil Elderkin, who also shot Frank Ocean’s similarly gloomy "Pyramids" video, directed the clip. Dude seems to have a thing for down-and-out pole dancers. Watch The Weeknd in a new video for his track "Twenty Eight," below.

Track Meet: How’s Everyone

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Sometimes all you can hope for is to bask in a warm glowing neo-croon, and when that desire becomes too much to bear, it's time for THOMAS Hailing from the same city as most of the people making sexy music right now (Drake, The Weeknd, Drake ft. The Weeknd), Toronto native, Thomas Gill is the man behind THOMAS. His vocals are moist and intimate, floating through the ethereal low-end synthetic bliss that is his sophomore album   B R E A T H (Totally Disconnected). The emotronic post-smooth R&B, elicits the kind of enveloping listening experience that take you to where THOMAS knows you need to be. There's a certain reminiscence of both HTDW and Kate Bush, as the jazz undertones lock in that precise rhythmic anchor while the vocals drift away. In "How's Everyone" he purrs lines like "Of course we're in the shower/And of course the water's hot." It isn't even a question. Hit THOMAS' bandcamp for some free downloads off B R E A T H. "How's Everyone" is at top of the list.
