Sonic Split

Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, of Sonic Youth, called it quits over the weekend

After 27 years of marriage, Kim and Thurston separated. The couple behind Sonic Youth married in 1984 and made cynics believe in love. Many of those cynics have returned to form. Reactions to the news garnished tweets of horror and blog posts of disappointment. Flavorwire called it the “Worst News Ever” and top tweets include, “All hope is lost,” “the ultimate bummer” and “worse than the worst.”

Is it really though? They were together for 27 years, which is more than a lifetime for most of the people lamenting their break-up. So, why are people making Kim and Thurston’s divorce all about themselves? Would people rather they stay in an unhappy relationship just to keep up public morale?

This phenomenon isn’t new but social media newly illuminates how we bring everything back to the proverbial “me.” We can’t help but feel that if you love the duo so much that you lost all hope upon hearing the news, you should be able to respect their decision. We’re sure it’s harder on them than it is on you.

The other part of the news touched on the future of Sonic Youth. “Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November,” read the press release. “Plans beyond that tour are uncertain.” For mega fans, start looking into flights to Sao Paulo. The rest of us can take refuge in their 16 studio albums, 46 music videos, 3 compilation albums, 8 official bootlegs and 7 extended plays.

Plus, there’s still Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo to keep your husband/wife band dreams alive.

Mommy and Daddy of Alt Rock

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. Wife and husband. Mother and father of Alternative Rock. Sonic Youth dream boats. If you don’t know who these two amazing culture makers are, we can’t help you. Recently, VBS TV met up with Kim and Thurston to do a live studio audience interview in rainy England. Hosted by Ian of The Chain and The Gang, he quizzes the couple about their music being a feminist influence (Tobi Vail’s idea), vegetarianism in comparison to pop stars, why no one is buying vinyl anymore, why black metal is deathless and everything in between. This is a must watch.
