We’ve all been there: you tell yourself you’re going to start getting fit three months before your vacation, then before you know it you’re leaving for the Caribbean in two weeks and you’re in no better shape than when you booked the trip last fall. At this point it seems hopeless, but could you get bikini ready in two weeks?
You might be surprised at the difference you can make in your body in just a few weeks if you really commit to it. You’ve probably heard that it’s only safe to lose one to two pounds per week, but there is little data to support this. It’s not really about how much you lose, but how you lose it.
As far as safety goes, you don’t want to fast or do any crazy crash diets to get the weight off. If you do, not only are you putting your health at risk, you’ll likely gain it all back as soon as you start eating normally again, which will likely be at the start of your vacation. And there’s really no point in losing weight just to gain it back the second your toes touch the sand.
So how can you get fit just a few weeks? Pretty much the same way you lose weight any other time: by eating less and working out more. If you’re eating around 1200 calories per day and exercising for about an hour, you could safely lose 3-5 pounds per week. This means you could lose up to 10 pounds if your vacation is in two weeks.
Just cutting down on your sodium and starches alone can help you lose up to five pounds in water weight. As far as eating goes, focus on eating lots of veggies and lean protein like egg whites and turkey, and drink plenty of water to help yourself feel full. If you want to limit yourself to a certain amount of calories, use an app like MyFitnessPal to track what you eat.
So, while it’s not exactly reasonable to expect to drop a ton of weight in the weeks leading up to your vacation, you can definitely shape up two weeks before you take off.
